One year ago at this time, I accepted a position teaching Computer Science to grades 5-8 with the expansion next year of teaching both 3 and 4 as well. The school has been wanting to expand the Computer Science program. I was excited and nervous about everything.
I have found out that I missed teaching middles. This job reminded me of my student teaching Middle School Math. How much I enjoyed working with the team of teachers, working with an age that is so full of change.
COVID has changed middle school though. Currently, no one knows how to whisper. Classrooms are loud and boisterous even when they are working. Collaboration is a struggle. The students though are more willing to look at different mediums to learn. They don’t mind videos, infographics or interactive websites. This is a plus.
As I finished the year and reflected on my blended learning, I am making a list of ways to improve the student agency in learning, setting better deadlines for them, and teaching them how to be reflective of the mastery of their learning.
I am looking forward to the summer of building out the curriculum to further engage the students in Computer Science.
